HOW TO CHOOSE A YOGA MAT?
There are many different styles of yoga and choosing the right mat for your practice is not always easy. It is essential to have the right support. Yoga accessories require special care in their choice because practicing yoga starts with the right equipment.
Hatha, Yin, Prenatal, Restorative, Nidra yoga... : privilege comfort above all. A mat between 5 and 8 mm limits the impact between your body and the ground and thus protects your back and joints. Thickness is an essential criterion when you practice yoga or when you are asked to hold the postures for longer.
Resistance to wear and tear is also a criterion to take into account when choosing your mat. It is best to choose a yoga mat that resists repetition of exercises. Soft yoga mats are usually made of PVC, TPE or cotton.
Ashtanga, Iyengar, Vinyasa, Hot yoga... : focus on stability and adherence. These types of yoga have the particularity of standing and balance postures. Opt for a mat with a thickness between 3 and 5 mm. A mat that is too thick will make balance work more difficult.
For dynamic practices you need a mat that gives you good support so you don't slip between postures. A good grip is essential.
For particularly hot practices such as hot yoga, it may also be recommended to use a microfiber towel or a hand towel on your mat. The rubber material on the bottom of the towel will give you the extra grip, with the microfiber material on top to absorb your sweat while you practice!
